Update: My Colitis Symptoms for 2011

Hey UC’ers,

I wanted to get off to everyone an update with regards to how things are going for me. Last time I shared a story, my ulcerative colitis symptoms were starting to get quite out of control with all sorts of bathroom breaks, filled with soft messy bloody poops. That’s right, full blown colitis flare was just around the corner. Oh, let me point out that I’ve lost about ten pounds in the past month for sure as well. The blue jeans from the levi’s shop in SF that were on sale before the holidays are hanging way too low.

Butt, as my uncle and dad always say, everything in life is temporary. This seems to be the case as well for my UC flare. I’m not completely out of the woods just yet, but that time is getting very close.

What Have I Done Differently?

Starting on January 7th, 2011, I broke my streak of being medication free since Oct. 5, 2009. I started taking a twice a day dose of prednisone steroids. 10mg in the morning, and 5 mg in the afternoon/evening. For a total of 15mg per day (i realize I mis-spoke when I said 10 and 10 in the video, guess I was just too excited about it all…)

Also, I have started over again on the Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD). This time, I am working in home made yogurt with my yogurt maker from amazon, that I promised you all I would begin to do. I actually have all kinds of video and photos from my first SCD yogurt making extravaganza that I am behind on publishing too. Here again is the yogurt maker I bought, and its super easy to make yogurt with, and damn tasty too:

My Plan Moving Forward:Right now, I am not wanting to start tapering off the prednisone just yet, but if things keep the way they are and continue to improve to the point where I’m dropping hard bombs in the toilet for the next week, I plan on tapering on a very slow taper over the next two months. This would be similar to my tapering I did the first time I successfully started the SCD diet. Basically, I can see myself going down by 2.5mg to 12.5mg/day for two weeks, and then to 10mg/day for another two weeks etc… until I am at 0mg/day and off all drugs again.
We will just have to see how it all goes. At the moment though, I am getting pretty excited leaving the bathroom with a sense of accomplishment, if you can believe that. Just to throw in a little reality check, I would be lying if I said I wasn’t still a bit scared to see what comes out each time. I know how this colitis disease can turn around and make a run for the worse in just a few days. But, when things are looking up, might as well ride the wave.
Take care everyone & join the writing contest if you haven’t already. I am really hoping that a whole bunch of people will make it to Las Vegas in December 2011 to join me in the half marathon.
