Ulcerative Colitis and High Fructose Corn Syrup

Adam from ihaveucMany people find themselves wondering what they can and can’t eat with UC. Or better yet, what is good and what is bad for their ulcerative colitis. So, the hope is this posting will give you an idea with good old High Fructose Corn Syrup and your UC.

One thing is for sure, high fructose corn syrup is very hard to avoid in our modern world. Unless you are living way off the grid, this stuff(HFCS) is getting thrown in your face all day everyday. There are all kinds of reasons for that which I won’t get into(as many of the reasons are based around the old $). So, what’s the deal with this new food(if you want to call it that)???)

High fructose corn syrup is derived from corn, but its not corn. Its chemically altered and tastes sweet. Its also very easy to manufacture in large quantities, and its cheaper than honey and other more natural sweetners. That’s one of the major reasons why it has invaded our world.

For me, I don’t eat high fructose corn syrup anymore. Save the few times where I mistakenly allow it to invade my diet when out to a restaurant or away from the house. But by and large, I avoid it like the plague.

Since changing my diet back in August 2009, cutting out HFCS and some other thigns, has allowed my ulcerative colitis to go to sleep on the symptoms side and quite possibly made me a much healthier person.

Now, here is an example of how things used to be for me with the high fructose corn syrup:
Back before I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis, I would often drink soft drinks like root beer, Coke (coca cola), Fanta, Dr. Pepper, and sprite and 7-Up. All of which are packed full with high fructose corn syrup. TONS OF IT in every can. And for some reason, one which I didn’t understand at the time, I would always have a stomach ache, or at least quite often after chugging down a can of one of those drinks. I would always just think as a child that it was from the carbonation. I thought the bubbles were messing with my insides, and maybe that is also true. But now, I am convinced that it was the high fructose corn syrup which was actually messing me up.

Do I think the corn syrup was the complete cause for me coming down with 5 plus years of ulcerative colitis symptoms and an eventual “SEVERE UC” diagnosis after the colonoscopy? NO!
But, I surely think that it was one of the reasons for the UC getting so out of control I couldn’t deal with it anymore.(Who likes taking 10 plus dumps a day with all kinds of blood and 1 plus rolls of toilet paper every 24 hours?)
Would I recommend for everyone out there to eliminate or at least greatly reduce their high fructose corn syrup intake if possible? Hell Yes.

This is in response to a questions about how much high fructose corn syrup I eat now on this new diet, and I hope it answers your questions.
To all the high fructose corn syrup farmers out there, I wish you well in the long run.
