Toilet Ridden…

Hey Guys-
I am suffering from a pretty bad flare that hit me like a freight train. Called my Gastro for an appoitment, but it’s in late March…. Basically, I have been trying EVERYTHING to get this stupid flare down, but seriously, nothing is working. The pain isn’t even subsiding. I haven’t had this bad of a flare since I was hospitalized, and it’s got me worried. They had me get some and samples tested, but they have not gotten back with me yet. So, any suggestions? I am willing to try just about anything now.

I am currently taking Lialda and Rowasa enemas.

  1. If there is one thing I’ve learned, it is not to wait. My doctor always says to call him as soon as I flare. He said one week and two weeks are definitely too long to wait to do anything. He also says if I can’t get in to see him, to go straight to emergency and tell them that I’m a patient of his. So really, I suggest you go to the emergency at your hospital. Yes, you maybe hospitalized – but if this is the best thing for you then it should be done. At the very least, you’ll get some medical attention and maybe a change in your medication to help end the flare. I have firs-hand experience of waiting too long – I waited four weeks and by the time I went to the hospital I hadn’t had anything to eat or drink in three days and my colon was so badly ulcerated that the doctor couldn’t do the colonoscopy. Yes, I ended up in the hospital for a week but it was the best thing for me and now I’m on new medicine and feeling better.
Moral of the story being – go to the hospital sooner rather than later.

    take care,

  2. Call that gastro back! Learn something from my experience DO NOT UNDERSTATE YOUR SYMPTOMS! Unless you call them and say you can’t take the pain they won’t schedule you quickly. Next time you call say you think that you might end it all because the pain is so great. You’ll get an appointment. My mom (a nurse) taught me that one.
    Good luck!

  3. Lisa,

If your doctor can’t squeeze you in for an appointment within 24-48 hours, find another doc. That’s just not acceptable. As said above, consider the ER if it becomes unmanageable.

    Best of luck
