One of the questions I had right after being diagnosed was about OJ. Can I drink it or not with Ulcerative Colitis?
I always thought that orange juice was not a good thing for me to be drinking for my colitis because it contains so much acid. Truthfully, I don’t even know how OJ compares on the acid scale to other juices. So, I decided not to drink it for quite some time. About a year actually. Prior to being diagnosed, I was drinking OJ all the time, and not thinking twice about it. Minute Maid, Tropicana, whatever type was available.
After changing my diet in August of 2009, I re-introduced orange juice to my daily program. So far, I don’t think my ulcertive colitis is upset in anyway. On an average day, I put some in my morning smoothie, then usually a small glass or two later on in the day/night.
There is one major part of this equation which may be playing a role in everything working, I only buy OJ that is “Not from Concentrate”.
Also, if we run into some fresh oranges that need juicing, we do that too.
Does anyone else enjoy OJ and drink it on a regular basis with your UC?
I started site and the eNewsletter(you can join that below) shortly after being diagnosed with ulcerative colitis in October of 2008 with severe pancolitis (when my whole colon was inflamed).
For me, it was a very rough start with severe symptoms. Getting bounced from medication to medication was not easy or too helpful. But, I did meet another UC’er, changes several parts of my diet, and of course the rest is history.
