I would give Dr. Alkhouri 5 stars if it weren't for the fact that she told us that diet has nothing to do with UC when our son first started seeing her. However, she learned more about the Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD) when she was at a conference while he was still in the hospital, and she has become very supportive about our using diet as a therapy. However, medication is still her first thing to try, I think, and our son's case was so difficult that he is on medication as well as diet to stay in remission right now. Also, because he is 17, he is not as cooperative with diet as he might be, and sometimes cheats.... However, Dr. Alkhouri is very collaborative and kind, and is the best listener possible. I can't imagine her being any better. Sometimes I think she might be a little too collaborative with the other doctors in the hospital who don't know as much as she does about UC; I would prefer that her opinion be the only one when decisions need to be made, but I appreciate it when she listens very respectfully to my research, and takes it into account. The office staff is fine, and works well with our Presbyterian insurance. I would say that Dr. Alkhouri is such a good advocate with insurance; if something needs to be approved, she works hard herself to make sure that it happens, and we are never waiting long for their approval.
