Dr. Lawrence Halparin is a clinical professor and department head at the Gastroenterology Division in St. Paul’s hospital in Vancouver, with many years of experience.

He prescribed medication and didn’t give me many ideas about nutrition, he only said to eat bland food when I have a flareup. He explained the way colitis worked and said that they didn’t know what caused it. He is a nice doctor and he has knowledge of medication and scientific data, all within the realm of the mainstream medicine. I prefer something more on the holistic side and precisely detailed nutrition. After all, Hippocrates said that all disease starts in the gut. He also said:”let you food be your medicine and let your medicine be your food”. What I have stated here is my personal opinion and experience.

I had Dr H for years and thought he was quite good. I’ve had it for more than twenty years. What I would recommend is creating a food diary.

In vertical columns write as a header anything you think contributes to a flare up. Mine included: Food; Stress level; Exercise; and a ranking as to how I felt. Use it for at least all your major meals but more frequently if you can.
    Good luck.

Dr. Halperin was treating me for Crohn’s disease when I was having bouts of diarrhea although I was diagnosed by a doctor in Victoria. Years later when I went vegetarian, my symptoms disappeared .He had me retested for the disease at Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria and when the test results came back, it turned out I didn’t have it. My son has been diagnosed with Celiac disease and I am wondering could that have been my issue. I did get tested for Celiac but it came back negative. I was told to eat Gluten Foods but I am not sure I did. I still have problems with gas and sometimes I am constipated but I guess maybe I should do that 23 and me test.
