Concerned and Sympathetic Mom

Introduction:

I am a mom. IBD runs in my family. I am devastated that my son has to suffer with this illness.
I am hopeful that the symptoms can be turned around and he can go into remission and start to enjoy his life.

My Son Has Ulcerative Colitis:

I won’t say too much because I know that I can be perceived as the “helicopter” mom.  I had a brother with Crohn’s colitis. I think I have IBS because I need that bathroom when I need it. The reason I am reading on this website is because of my son, who was recently diagnosed. I want to help without being overly intrusive. Everyone has their own path, I know that. I don’t want to get in some one’s way and then step on their toes. I do have a lot of curiosity and interest in the medical field as I work in a hospital and look at medical records all day long. I am not a nurse or a doctor or other practitioner, but I pick up bits and pieces along the way.

I want to help, but, like I said,

in a non-intrusive manner.

This is also making me think about switching my diet as I have the symptoms of IBS. I won’t get into details but I pound on the door when there is someone in there. I have had accidents. I did have a clean colonoscopy when I was 50. I am thinking there are things on this website that would help me handle IBS better. I have questions. I am a little upset with my son’s GI for not being as available to answer questions as I believe a person with a new diagnosis needs.

The question I have is: As per coffee, is it the caffeine.? If so, would you say that chocolate and caffeine pills are going to bring about similar symptomatology?

The GI doc said diet is not the solution, however, logic would say what you put into your digestive system is going to reach your colon and affect your outcome one way or the other. It may not cause it or cure it, but I believe that if you have to eat, everyday to stay alive, you can make the choices that help you enjoy your life better.
Also, I am not a cook. I am a person who eats what is easy. So I want to change that and help my son learn some ways to prepare food for himself. So can you recommend any good resources (including this website)?
