◦Question: Do you have any good friends with ulcerative colitis?
◦My Answer: No its a very uncommon disease here.

◦Question: Did you freak out when they put the IV in your arm before the colonoscopy?
◦My Answer: No I just look away when they do it

◦Question: Did you sometimes have blood drops around the toilet bowl that you wiped up because it would have been BIGTIME embarrasing if others saw that stuff?
◦My Answer: Sure did, I am meant to be a lady after all.

◦Question: Did you ever feel like you were going to crap out your colon, and see it swimming in the toilet bowl?
◦My Answer: It’s one of my sayings at this point that I was close enough to crapping out my colon.

◦Question: Did you ever finish going to the bathroom and begin walking to bed, and then actually go right back to the toilet?
◦My Answer: Yeah so annoying especially when you actually have just made it to bed and got a snug position.

◦Question: Did you ever just barely make it to the toilet in-time, 1/2 second later would have been an asstastrophe?
◦My Answer: Almost happens during a flare up. I once went on a long trip with the college by bus and managed to hold it for two hours. Worst day of my life. Sitting there thinking if I have an accident on a bus full of college students I would have to go to a different college to not be known as the smelly girl who crapped on the bus. Awful! And I always thank my ass cheeks for being so strong that day!

◦Question: Did you ever have a hard time swallowing a steroid pill, and then have that NASTY taste in your mouth?
◦My Answer: I don’t ever want that horrible taste in my mouth. Dreadful so it was!

◦Question: Did you ever act sicker than you really were for a hidden reason?
◦My Answer: No there are times when I want to alright to get out of things, but I dont.

◦Question: Did you ever forget what it was like to actually have a normal bowel movement?
◦My Answer: Yeah and forget what its like to not have a bloated stomach. I’d say we are the only bunch around who cheer and skip out of the toilet if we have a normal hard crap!

◦Question: Did you ever think the thought that jumping off a bridge wasn’t such a bad idea?
◦My Answer: No never have. I still love my life no matter how bad it is.

◦Question: Did you ever eat some spicy Indian food and think that was the reason for the blood?
◦My Answer: No I always think it’s bad when I see blood.

◦Question: Did you ever sit in bed and feel like a worthless piece of nothing?
◦My Answer: Yes unfortunately when you have so many plans and then you get a flare up and you cannot do even simple tasks.

◦Question: Did you ever wish this disease on your worst enemy?
◦My Answer: Another saying of mine “I wouldn’t even wish this disease on my worst enemy”. But sometimes I do wish people would have my symptoms for a day so they can understand what I go through especially to the people who think I over exaggerate or think I am a hypocondriac.

◦Question: Did you feel confused with all of the treatments you had been through?
◦My Answer: Yep and I always forget to take my tablets even after nearly three years it is all still confusing.

◦Question: Although things weren’t working medically, did you still like your doctor?
◦My Answer: My first doctor who took me seriously I invited to my exhibition and she met all my family and my doctor who diagnosed me and who I am still under I get on with very well and will be asking him to write about Ulcerative Colitis in my new exhibition. He is the kind of doctor who lets me argue my point and if I don’t want to take meds he doesn’t push me.

◦Question: Did you sometimes disagree with your GI doctor?
    ◦My Answer: As above!

◦Question: Did you like the nurses at the doctor’s office
◦My Answer: Yeah, very funny story with one nurse. I shall save that story for a rainy day.

◦Question: Do you look at yourself differently now?
◦My Answer: Big Time! I changed completely. My attitude, my humour and even my art since I was diagnosed. I find people seem to respect me more now than they ever did.

◦Question: Do you value your life more than years ago?
    ◦My Answer: Yes

    ◦Queston: Do you bleed anymore?
◦My Answer: Yes but that is due to colonoscopy, it is healing up now due to SCD plan.

◦Question: Do you go through 1 roll of toilet paper a day still?
    ◦My Answer: No

◦Question: Do you eat cheese and onion crisps, cadbury’s chocolate and ice cream anymore?
◦My Answer: No it’s tough, REALLY tough but when I now see people with junk food and want it I make myself think of some of the worst nights on the toilet, where I am practically screaming and how much I have lost out on due to UC and it puts me right off.

◦Question: Do you drink alcohol still?
    ◦My Answer: No

◦Question: Are you OK with that?
◦My Answer: Yes and no. I am ok with that but people around me are not. Being from Ireland it is like you are not social or you are boring if you don’t drink.

◦Question: Do your parents still ask what you can/can’t eat?
◦My Answer: Yes, everytime I eat something they will ask “are you sure you can eat that?”. Drives me crazy sometimes but I know they are only trying to help.

◦Question: Do you take any medications for UC right now?
◦My Answer: Yeah I am on Pentasa 4000mgs daily.

◦Question: Do you like your new diet?
◦My Answer: It’s meh! Doing it for the health benefits that is it.

◦Question: Are you ready to backpack around South Asia, New Zealand and Austrailia next year?
◦My Answer: I am as ready as I will ever be with this disease. It will be my biggest challenge. But I cannot wait. I want to prove that an illness like this cannot hold us back as much as we think. I hope to actually keep everyone updated through my travels of long distant travelling, trekking through jungles and big hikes and how I am coping with it all.

◦Question: Do you still think you can do anything?
◦My Answer: yeah i do, okay I cannot eat junk food but really shouldn’t be eating it anyway being sick or not. I will always push on in some way even through a flare up.

◦Final Question: Is your life over?
◦My Answer: HELL NO! And I hope no one EVER feels like that with this disease. We are not defined by the disease. It is only a small part of who we are. If we don’t think that the disease has won.And if you are stuck for a bit of get go? Do what I do put on some funky tracks mine being 1-walking on sunshine by KC and the sunshine band. 2-You’ve got the love by Candi Stanton feat The source “sometimes i feel like throwing my hands up in the air”. 3-Get your freak on by Missy Elliot. I find that dancing to these songs make me forget about the bloating and pain too. Get your tracks and go for it!! :)

◦Question: Did you ever have a hard time swallowing a steroid pill, and then have that NASTY taste in your mouth?

I find swallowing tablets fine but some leave a real nasty taste… my solution? load em into those plasticky-gelatin capsules, either buy a cheap pack of paracetemol, and empty the powder or buy empty capsules online.

•Question 14: Did you feel confused with all of the treatments you had been through?
•My Answer: Yes, it seems like doctors don’t have good answers for this disease.

•Question 15: Although things weren’t working medically, did you still like your doctor?

•My Answer: No, not without a colon. When I had UC, probably used 1 and a half a day.

    •My Answer: I don’t bike.

•Question 32: Do you still think you can do anything?
•My Answer: No, they say you can do anything with an ostomy bag, that’s bull. You couldn’t play football, you couldn’t do a lot of stuff without the fear of breaking your bag or damaging your stoma, but you couldn’t do a lot of those things with a flare either, so I’m content with that.

•Final Question: Is your life over?
No, feel like I got a new lease on life, happy to be alive, happy to be playing with my son again, happy to help my wife out around the house. I’ve been at home for over a month, it’s been a little depressing, but I think once I return to work, return to the gym, all that will go away. Still got two more surgeries to go before the whole J Pouch thing is done, but I’m enjoying my time out of the bathroom for sure. Merry Christmas! This was a fun survey!

    My Answer: No

Question 14: Did you feel confused with all of the treatments you had been through?

Question 15: Although things weren’t working medically, did you still like your doctor?
My Answer: I changed doctors as I couldn’t get on with the first one. He just didn’t listen and talked over the top of me when I tried to explain how I was feeling and what was happening. Yes, he’d studied the condition, but has never experienced it. New doctor is nice, but pretty useless tbh. In the UK, there isn’t enough money to give people with chronic conditions proper time and treatment. I attend my 3-4 monthly appointments just to stay in the system, but I have no faith in my doctor, as nice as he is. He hasn’t even heard of SCD! Come on man, do some research!

My Answer: No, but I’m feeling really positive about getting pregnant and having a baby! 2012 is going to be my year!

Merry Christmas Adam and fellow UC’ers.

Thanks for the work, help and support over the year.

Question: Did you ever release the most inhumanly toxic fart in a crowded place and blame your wife?

Answer: Yes, and the look she gave me was priceless. Hee hee.

    Colitis can be fun too……

Good one Peter, I would’ve done this, but when I had UC I was too scared to fart because I lost the ability to know whether it was a fart, a shart, a squirt, or a full blow out. So glad I don’t have to deal with that any more. No colon, no worries. Except my stoma (part of your small intestine that sticks out of your abdomen after surgery) often makes some pretty loud noises that sound like wet farts. I’m not sure how I will explain that at work or in an elevator, maybe I’ll blame it on the wife.
