The Worst Colitis Flare – Urgency Fresh Blood and Cramps

Introduction:

Hi all, I am Julie, 48 years old, usually very active, I live in the UK and am a deli chef full time. I have 3 beautiful grown up children and 1 grandaughter. My life consists of regular exercise, socializing with friend and frequent travel.

british mom with colitis comic

My Symptoms:

I am currently in the throes of a severe flare up, which seems to have its own mind and has decided it’s here to stay. I am experiencing the urgency with fresh blood lots of it too, cramps, weakness to mention but a few. I actually pooped myself in the street yesterday it was horrendous. I don’t seem to be getting any better!!!

I was diagnosed with colitis in 2002

and have been quite lucky

even though I have a non strict diet

and drank alcohol most weekends.

Until now!!!

I was on holiday in Spain when I got the first sign i was in a flare. I still had 3 weeks left in Spain so the UC manifested itself rapidly. As soon as I got back to the United Kingdom I started a 8 week course of pred steroid starting at 40 mg tapering to 5mg. It was clear after 3 weeks nothing was changing. so after the butt camera revealed a ugly granular colon I was hospitalized on IV steroids for 5 days then home back on oral at 40mg down to 5mg. Two weeks on I feel wretched I am bloated beyond belief, tired due to lack of sleep, irritable, mouth sores and sick of seeing blood down the pot.

I have started some natural products, aloe vera, probiotic aciddiphilus, zinc, vitamin b, omega 3 and manuka honey, I just pray something changes soon. I have no energy can’t work and can’t be bothered I am coming up to week9 now and I am scared it won’t ever change.

Has anyone ever had such a long flare, is there light at the end of this long dark tunnel as I was told during my latest butt camera my colon was a mess and they considered removing it. I was so afraid, and still am as my symptoms have only eased very slightly but feel too afraid to seek anymore help for fear of them mentioning the dreaded colectomy. Being a single woman after my husband left me for a younger model, which i totally get. I would rather try keep my colon for as long as I can. I would like to wish all of you the very best living with this horrible silent lonely illness.

Where I’d like to be in 1 year:

Just healthy and happy nothing more

Colitis Medications:

Steroids oral and anal, mezzavent 1250mg 4 times daily, laxicol
