Ulcerative Colitis Tips

One of the 15,000 ulcerative colitis folks using the site adds:
"Like many UCers I have spent many hours trawling the internet googling the condition and came across your website a few years ago. I read your ebook and really liked your honesty and humour. As everyone says your positivity is so encouraging and now this is my go to website when I'm thinking about UC. Thankfully my symptoms are pretty much under control at the moment but just wanted to say thanks." Kate

MY CASE OF COLITIS IS GOOD NEWS

punky demure colitis

this past summer in Florida when the flair started

Introduction:

OK, I am now feeling like my old self … and the ulcerative colitis is in remission for now .. I was diagnosed around 7 years ago .. with a mild case .. during the colonoscopy the doc said he cauterized the ulcers . I never got any more problems until around 6 years later and that 7th year .. it seemed the flair ups were not going away .. every other day .. or maybe 2 or 3 … So I finally got my 2nd colonoscopy … Now, I am a bit older than you Adam by a few generations .. so I’m lucky in that sense .

The Current Colitis Story:

OK, now, after the 2nd colonoscopy, it seems the condition has worsened .. and now it’s probably moderate en route to severe ..
BUT, for the last three weeks, I’ve bought a new blender , reading up on the Bad and good foods ..
checklist — nope never drink soda Adam (whew) — not much sugar .. no cakes and junk (whew) …
Do eat yogurt (now Greek yogurt) .. (Yes) …. Blueberries every morning … and lots of wheat product (BAD) … OK
Not too rough to change up some things … this older body hasn’t complained ever much!!

More exercise with my X Box 360 (Just Dance 3) .. son got it set up .. (Whew) .. glad I can be in the world of technology … so that’s a big YES YES …. I was a dancer many years ago and I’m bringing it back .. Many older people over 50 think that’s all for kids .. but put your dancing shoes on .. it was a big help for me … the exercise along with the medicine made the next day BETTER and BETTER .
Three weeks into post colonoscopy I’ve gotten a bit of help with meds.

I began taking Asacol .. 8 pills a day!! YUP, it’s working now … be patient … It took about 3 weeks to return to a normal BM and NO BLOOD … What a relief … As I have read that IBM puts one more at risk for colon cancer .. you bet I’ll do everything I can avoid that fate ..
Also,
I’ve decided after reading about it as well, that I would add some probiotics .. 2 or 3 a day .. According to studies I have read that those are beneficial .. And the shakes are helping too .. OJ, Blueberries, bananas, Greek yogurt mixed in .. I’m trying lots of new ones this week ..
I bought the Ninji blender .. it has two single single blenders .. and you can make one serving at a time. I bought some parsnips and carrots . gonna mush that up too ..
Good Luck and if you have any good “shakes” .. not fattening .. I’ll use yours Adam too.

Yaay! Way to go! Taking matters into our own hands and not letting the disease get us down helps at least as much as those meds. Love that you’re using the xbox! It can get you moving and sweating for sure! I also love making the shakes/smoothies. I usually just do the same though (banana, berries, yogurt) and I add some peanut butter.
    Keep getting and staying healthy!

Happy to hear you have things under control! Like you, I’m an older person with UC. Right now, I’m feeling better and take Hydrocortisone enemas and my doctor put me on Lialda which I now take. My UC has gone away for now but I do watch what I eat too. I make smoothies and have cut out coffee. I am also eating gluten free products. I take probiotics, vitamins and calcium.

    Hi Rebeka .
You are a real cheerleader. I’ve always believed in staying active .. I wasn’t thinking Adam would publish my entire write up … and I would have perfected the English , cause I am a writer too .. I use the skill to research research research .. and in my new acceptance of UC … I’ve decided to stay on the course .. Thanks to Adam’s REAL LIFE stories, I am hoping to stay healthy … I do advise people who are diagnosed with “mild” UC … during a simple colonoscopy, if there is such a thing .. to act on it when you hear any diagnosis .. I ignored mine because 7 years ago .. it never bothered me … taking steps early on … could have prevented the move to a moderate case … IF I returned for the 2nd colonoscopy at the suggested 5 years my doctor requested .. I think I would have been in better shape .. but waiting the extra two years … placed me in a worse position.

back to my morning exercise .. X BOX … I’ve got a few 4 stars for the dancing, but gotta get up 5 stars to get some achievements …. getting back to my normal weight too …
