My Colitis – I Thought it was Stomach Flu

In late 2009 after a night of eating a lot of sweets, I started having diarrhea accompanied by pain in my stomach. This continued for three days, and I thought it was another case of the stomach flu. But days turned into weeks and one morning I woke up in having unbearable sharp pain in my stomach. It felt like my intestines was being shredded and torn apart. I went to the walk in clinic with my mom. The doctor asked questions and made an appointment for me with a pediatric doctor. I was 14 at the time. After a few weeks I met with the pediatric doctor and he prescribed me some iron supplements and ordered a blood test to see if I was allergic to gluten. The test came back negative. I then went to my family doctor and ordered stool samples which also came back negative. During this time I was getting frustrated because I didn’t know what was wrong with me and I was still having diarrhea and pain. Every time I ate or drank anything I had to run to the washroom. The pain got worse and I started seeing blood in the toilet. I immediately called and scheduled an appointment with my doctor. On the day of my appointment I was very sick and tired. I was just steps away from the door when I started to feel dizzy and light headed. I started to become deaf and I could no longer hear my mom. And then I just blacked out. Luckily my mom was there to catch me or I would have probably hit my head and died. I woke up in the ER connected to an IV tube . After a colonoscopy I was diagnosed with ULCERATIVE COLITIS!… my life changed forever.
