Flare Up and Developing Left Side Pain

Introduction:

I am 33 years old, I was diagnosed about 2 years ago, since then I have been in remission until now. But this time, the flare is not going away. I don’t really know what to do.

Some more about me:

I enjoy walking with my five year old Golden Retriever, we walk a lot but since I am in a flare up I just don’t want to do much.

Symptoms:

I was in remission for 2 whole years, this past May, work became so insanely busy and I started working late and eating CRAP!! Stressful long hours, have caused me to fall off of keeping up with the SCD diet.

Flare Up and Developing Left Side Pain

My flareup symptoms, started on May 24th of this year. First it was a harmless little blood and flash forward to last week. I was in full flare up mode, blood, mucus, no poopy, if poopy very little with lots of pain. I was on NO MEDICATION, because I don’t believe in it. Everytime, I go to my doctor, he gives me ASACOL. That’s the answer to everything. I have asked him if its diet related, he says NO! I know otherwise, after I went for my first colonscopy (sp?) I started the SCD diet, and it does work. Maybe not for everyone but it did. I went from eating crap, to watching everything I did eat. No processed foods, no soy, no wheat, no diary, no sugar and I was in remission and enjoying life again. However, now, for some reason, I can’t shake off the flare up mode. The blood has lessen, not much gas and mucus has lessened. However, since yesterday, I started developing a Left side pain and it worries me. Anyone have any suggestions? I went to my GI doctor and took the day off. I should also say that I traveled to South America for 2 days, but hardly eat anything. The doctor said you have to take Asacol and Tramadol (50MG) for side pain. The doctor said its possible that it is spreading????!! What? That is the last thing I need to hear. He said to rest and take meds and not go to work for at least two days, plus I have to go for colonscopy, to see what is going on.

Questions for UCers:
1) Has anyone experienced Left side pains, (almost I would guess around the liver area)? Does it go away?

2) I recently purchased a juice machine and started making pineapple juices on my own, to avoid sugars from anything canned? Does anyone else do this, is that good?

3) As previously mentioned, the blood and mucus has lessened on one end, but now the pain on the side, I have never experienced. Any thoughts?

4) After my trip, I have sleeping alot. Ugh.
Any feedback is greatly appreciated. I just want to get back to remission, but I can’t for some reason.

Medications:

As of Today, Asacol HG (800mg) 3 pills twice a day ( I already feel light headed which is why I am anti medications)
Tramadol (50 mg) 3X a day for side pain
and Canasa (1000mg) once at night.

    Hi 33,

Unfortunately, what is happening to you is all too common. I remember first being diagnosed with ‘proctitis’…only 7cm up the colon, and told that it would probably remain there. That flare was easy to get rid of with a suppository per day for a few weeks. A few years later, another flare, only worse…asacol and enemas got rid of it…now it was 20 cm. Flash forward to the past 5 years…I now have pancolitis…the whole colon…although I have somehow stumbled into remission (on a good probiotic and L-glutamine) without meds as well, because, like you, I won’t DO meds.

All this crap about how the UC won’t spread…I don’t know even one UCer whose condition has nor worsened, unfortunately. It just seems to spread in everyone…like a virus. Also, left sided pain is the norm…and, yes, it comes and goes.

    Cheers,
    Bev

I would definitely try a steroid foam enema. Helped me a lot during my last flare which was similar, left sided pain and inflammation up to the first bend.

I have had UC for over 23 years and it has always been in exactly the same spot. My disease is on the left side so that is where I usually have pain. I am currently in a flare so I understand your frustration. I ended up taking Prednisone again and started on Uceris but my flare was too bad to start only the Uceris.

The tough thing about diet is that there are so many conflicting ideas out there. Some people swear off all animal products while others swear by red meat or eggs. Some people swear off glutton but for me, pasta is sometimes one of the few things I feel I can eat. Some people swear off dairy while others have to start the day with yogurt. As for me, I have a go-to list of things I know I can have in a flare. They may not always be the best choice but prednisone can make you crazy and when I am flaring, I can’t always think clearly enough to plan meals well. Of course, trying to actually cook while living on the toilet and trying to care for 4 kids can also make it tough.

I will say though that even in yet another flare, I know remission is just around the corner. When I get there again, I will continue to make changes in my diet for the long term, go back to yoga, clean my house, and enjoy it.

    1) Has anyone experienced Left side pains.
I have been slightly lucky in that I don’t suffer ‘pain’. I do however have them embarrassing load noises generally coming from the left side.
Most recently this has all disappeared

    2) I recently purchased a juice machine and started making pineapple juices on my own, to avoid sugars from anything canned? Does anyone else do this, is that good?
I make carrot juice which I enjoy. Just be careful having too much as fruits are high in fibre and fibre makes your colon work more so and this might be not helping if you are flaring.
Things like veg or chicken stock soup is good for flares.

    3) As previously mentioned, the blood and mucus has lessened on one end, but now the pain on the side, I have never experienced. Any thoughts?
I find when I am gassy, that not releasing the gas seems to make noises. I sometimes feel this is like the gas needing to be released is of high toxic for the colon and if adsorbed I get them weird noises. I don’t know if any of that makes sense, just something I have noticed.

    4) After my trip, I have sleeping alot. Ugh.
Any feedback is greatly appreciated. I just want to get back to remission, but I can’t for some reason.
I find when I am weak from a remission I get tired and lethargic.

My UC came about because I drowned and was pumped with antibiotics for 3 days straight and than given some for 7days post release. When I stopped smoking UC came about like hell but only recently, smoking again has got my UC gone. I mean my UC is not even there…well it is, I am not crazy but I live like it is not even there. I know this is not a long term option however I am about to do FMT. Getting the results of my brothers stools this week. So plan to do next week/2nd week of Sept.
life’s been crazy recently, needing to get my property ready to rent for next week, plans in place to open a sports academy whilst maintaining my full time job as a designer. I must say with a flare I couldn’t of had the energy to do what I currently am. I must also highlight I’ve had 3 appointments every 6months with my GI and on all occasions I got giving the spin about having a colonoscopy but finally on my last appointment I told them I am going to do FMT and within a week I got a letter asking to call to do a colonoscopy. STRANGE!!! Anyway, that’s booked in which gives me a crazy month ahead doing all the above plus FMT and than the scope on 3rd Oct.
sorry if I am not around, but always reading how things are on hear :-)
