Comments about doctor
Hi I am Uma, I am 53 years old.  I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis when i was 32 years old.I live in Hyderabad India. My doctors are Dr Nageswar Reddy and Dr Rupa Banerjee.Nageswar Reddy is the founder and head of the Asian institute of gastroenterology. He is a very renowned doctor and a good one.He diagnosed my condition being ulcerative colitis in the first instance itself after a colonoscopy. This was 21 years ago.But he suggested surgery i.e colectomy and referred me to a surgeon 21 years ago but the surgeon
asked me to manage my condition.( He told me this is not cancer so you can manage your condition) and i have been doing just that.

The Asian institute of gastroenterology is huge with several gastroenterologists. Colonoscopies, endoscopies, surgeries and what not.Nageswar Reddy is a very busy busy man now.During my last visit in 2009 oct i had an appointment for 6pm in the evening but he could see me at 12am(midnight) only. But i was told that he will see all the patients waiting for him and only then will he go home. He then asked me see doctor Rupa of the same institute as she specializes only in crohns and colitis.

Dr Rupa is a good doctor too.On any given day day we have to wait for 2 hours before we see her.Its normally on a first come first served basis. She chalks out a plan for treating and discusses this with us.I think it is usually like his. First mesacol (asacol) ,if that does not work,Mesacol and prednisone,if that fails then azoran(imuran),if that fails then remicade, and the last option is of course surgery. This is my opinion i.e what i gathered, may not be correct.

You will be amazed at the number of Crohn’s and Colitis patients coming to see her every day and most of them are very young in their early 20′s and teens.I generally chat with them while waiting and i found that mostly all of them had visited a foreign country before a trigger. Mostly the United States. May not be correct again but.

Most people here don’t have medical insurance. We pay ourselves. For a visit to this doctor we have to set a side a whole day.But we can go whenever we want there is no need for an appointment.Emergency cases will be attended immediately. So that’s all i have to say.Hope you guy guys got a fair picture of how things work here.

As a patient i went to asian institute and found it to be very commercial.Dr Reddy always gives surgical advice to patient of crohns therebye proving his poor knowledge about crohns and very commercisl.Dr R banerjee is even worse because she is yet to know more about crohns its medication not a properly trained G I to treat crohns lacks basic knowledge.Never go to AIG hyderabad to treat crohns becos I suffered a lot being treated by such inexperinced doctor there. So for god sake never try to go AIG hyd for crohns treatment.

The doctor’s at asian always suggest surgery. In fact Dr Rupa told me that you are neither too young nor too old and so the right candidate for surgery.Of course i brushed her off.So essentially we have to manage well with what works for us. Diet is also very important. The medications are similar everywhere which i have found out after reading all the stories here.So i dont know what a good doctor can do.No one suggests diet or probiotics. So we have to do what works for us.Good luck all Hyderabad UCers.

    Uma,

Thank you for taking time and writing this note about your experience. I feel as if I spoke to you in person about my problem through this forum. I am one of those young guns travelled to US and got UC not sure what made you say that in your note :) I was diagnosed last year and unfortunately, Lialda, 6 MP gave me pancreatitis so I cant take them anymore. I take prednisone which is not a safe drug, I try not to take it unless I got bloody stool cycle (which I guess is every 4 month for me). It goes on for 1 month with lot of bowel movements and blood. Every time (every cycle it is getting worst). My doc says try remicade , I am afraid as that has huge side effects. I am 30 years old and I often think will I make to ur age?? if this continues? even if I do can I handle one more bloody cycle??? DOnt have answer for that. I decided to try ayurvedic and homeopathic medicine and see if that works. For a 2 months it did work like charm specially homeopathic medicine did show good results but not sure how and wht triggered the cycle and back to square :) I am looking forward to the peace after the storm which will last for another 3 to 4 months and I can start enjoying my life again….

Hi Jag, of course you will make it to my age and longer. Must be positive i know how it feels when you are in a flare. First do what it takes to get the flare under control and then maintain the remission with proper diet and a good probiotic. You must try probiotics. Doctors never suggest that i dont know why. You will learn what works for you and learn to manage colitis.Alcohol is big NO. Dont touch it. Try to eat stuff with less fibre so that it does not irritate the colon. Homeopathy did not work for me. I tried it too. Where do you live? Which country? I think tibetan medicine works for some.If you are in India you could try that. Good luck. There is always light at the end of the tunnel. Hang on lot of research is going on. I am sure a cure is round the corner. My colitis started in1991.Things have improved so much since then that i cant believe it.When my doctor suggested surgery soon after diagnosing, i did go to the surgeon. But my uncle dissuaded me saying the longer you wait, more new treatments will emerge. So here i am. Gook luck.

Thank you Uma, your words gave hope and a smile :)
You are correct when I am flared up that is worst and everything (hope, emotions, & life) just seem to go down the toilet with the poop. I came across SCD and Probotics but my Doc never mentioned it, he once or twice said eat lot of curd which did help at times. I have decided to control my UC with strict diet and see if that works, we can decide what we want to but it works or not is not in our hand :) I hope it does. Prednisone, is increasing my sugar and it was VERY high last week, my doc and I both were shocked and yesterday I read somewhere that prednisone can do that. I have my 2nd colonoscopy today, not sure what to hope for? I guess I am just going to wait for the results and show it to multiple docs to take 2 opinion. I am thinking of following the book “Breaking the Vicious cycle”, http://www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info/home/
hope that will make little difference, also will surely try probotics, should I ask my doc about this? or is this something I can do on my own?.
BTW, I am in US and I loved when you said, longer I wait the better treatment will emerge. I really hope so, for all of us.
Thanks for your post and response!!!

    Hey guys,

I avoiding wheat and rice it helps a lot, problem with UC is u will not the progress or worsting without colonoscopy.
Additionally anything containing starch, sugar is also problamtic. It’s very difficult to go on this diet being an Indian but its better than shitting all the time. Keep an eye on your HB levels as it drops low and recovers slowly!!

We are patients of Dr. D. Nageshwar Reddy science 2000, I came for my wife treatment on 22/12/2012 for hemorrhoid (piles) treatment, consult Dr.Rupa Banerjee (reason of selection: lady Dr.) After meeting a minute, she suggest Diagnosis Sigmodoscopy, CBP, T3, T4 & TSH, we spend total time on 22/12/2012 11am to 9PM, we came with reports on Monday 24/12/2012 she came 3 hours late, sorry not late it may delay, we have shown patient reports she didn’t even saw the first report Sigmodoscopy properly , she didn’t turn the pages of CBP & Thyroid profile, I could not understand why she suggest diagnosis, she was not talking properly with patient within a minute we were out form the cabin, we asked for diet suggestion, she simply sendt us to dietician. It is not a good sign of Dr. D. Nageshwar Reddy hospital. It is very very neglectful treatment of Asia Institute of Gastroenterology. I think this institute fully commercial. Thanks for bad treatment.

If you want to move from nepal for your treatment then must go to cmc vellore. going to aig will be a big risk for everyone who are suffering physically.
