Continued SCD Success for Jessica

This past weekend was a long weekend in Canada called the Civic Holiday! So summer + a long weekend = a road trip! Kind of a no-brainer!

Well, if this long weekend fell last month I wouldn’t have even thought about going away! My UC symptoms were so bad, so out of control that I wouldn’t want to be in a car for over 5 minutes, never mind 3 hours! As most of us know and have experienced; having ulcerative colitis and traveling is NOT fun!

A couple of friends and I decided it would be fun to go up north for the weekend to cottage country! I did not hesitate at all, because I know that since starting the SCD diet, 1 month ago and feeling good for over 2 weeks straight now that I would have no problems being in a car for an extended period of time! So we packed up and headed out!

Being on the SCD diet, it is not always easy eating out at restaurants and not having access to fresh foods and things that are legal on the diet. Thankfully there was a grocery store near by! While my friends feasted on ice cream, cookies, chips, pies, cakes, hot dogs etc. I ate fresh meats and cheeses, apple chips, sunflower seeds, fruits, smoothies, carrot muffins made with almond flour, veggies etc.

AND GUESS WHAT? My friends who feasted on all that JUNK complained about how their stomachs hurt and were having various washroom “issues”. I on the other hand felt GREAT! No washroom issues at all and my energy levels were through the roof. So, for someone who has UC this was pretty amazing! I am so thankful for the SCD diet because it has shown me that what we put into our bodies really affects how we feel both mentally and physically. Eating healthy and feeling great outweighs the instant gratification of all that yummy junk food!

I thought I would share my success with all of you. I know that some of you are in the middle of a flare up and couldn’t even imagine going on a trip or a vacation any time soon. I just want to let you all know that I was in the same exact predicament about a month ago and now here I am telling you my success story. So if you are on the fence about starting the SCD diet, just TRY IT OUT, you really having nothing to lose and alot to gain if it does work for you!

Good luck to all of you battling UC!

Isn’t it awesome how UC and Crohn’s, coupled with dietary and lifestyle changes make us realize how important food is to our overall health.

For me, it also taught me how important protecting the environment is because that’s where I get my food from, not a package on the store shelves made synthetically in a lab.

Keep up with the diet and enjoy your new life!

Hell I wish that happened to me. Well I did for a short instance, but I was still on a big dose of prednisone and as soon as I came off the meds I flared up again.
Good luck to you and all the best.

Your posts are very helpful and inspiring! I can relate to the eating healthy vs. friends eating junk issue. I started out just gluten-free before phasing into the SCD, and although it really has been tough at times, I’ve gotten to the point where it doesn’t even bother me because I am finally acknowledging that even without IBD, this is the healthier choice, and WITH the IBD, the consequences are definitely not worth it! I look forward to future posts and wish you continued success!

This is awesome Jessica! Like you, I recently went on a road trip and noticed everyone else complaining about gut issues after eating fast food. I brought some food with me and made good choices at restaurants, and was completely fine. Glad I can finally enjoy my trips, maybe even more than the normal person might.
