A Whole New World or Life – Humira, Travel, Colitis

IntrodUCtion: I enjoy school, and my career as a Computer Tech.

Some more about Andrew: I love film, I collect films and film memorabilia. I am also a huge Disney Fan and enjoy trips down to Walt Disney World quite often. I also love my car, a 1985 Oldsmobile Toronado.

Symptoms: Stomach aches, urges to go, occasional blood in stool.

Hi, my name is Andrew and I was recently diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis.

After experiencing symptoms for multiple weeks, I finally had my mother drive me to the ER, thinking that is was my appendix that was causing all of the pain. When we arrived I was rushed to a room, the nurse even make jokes about me coming to the ER with my appendix and leaving without it (if only I was so lucky.) After long periods of waiting and multiple blood tests and a CT Scan I received my diagnoses of Colitis. My first thought was confusion, and then fear. All I remember wanting was a big bottle of Gatorade and my bed.

A few days later I had a follow-up appointment with my normal doctor. He said that a colonoscopy would give a better look at what exactly was going on inside of me. The colonoscopy was an interesting experience to say the least. The first couple of hours after the colonscopy was some of the worst pains I have ever felt.

The day after the colonscopy I went back to the hospital for a barium test in my small intestine. This test was not fun, but I`ll take the barium test over the prep of a colonscopy any day.

In the days after my test, I was staying at home binge watching movies, and classic T.V. and was living off of Gatorade. I felt terrible half the time and missed my job, and hanging out with friends. I have to hand it to my family for putting up with me during this period. I was grumpy and miserable. I also have to thank friends for coming over and keeping me company, I do not know where I would be without them.

When I finally had my appointment with a gastroenterologist, I was encouraged to try Humira. My mom instantly was filled with questions, and began to worry. After meeting with my Humira Ambassador some of my worries subsided.

Now I am a week away from starting my Humira treatment and I am nervous, but if this leads to my life going back to somewhat normal, I give it a try.

Some of my questions for other people with UC are about travel. I have a trip to Walt Disney World planned for the begining of August.

I was wondering if there are any travel tips that I should know before leaving? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Medications: I was currently taking Prednisone and Delzicol. Once I start Humira I will contiune Delzicol.
